We wanted to bring an important update to your attention regarding Itch.io and how it’s currently handling adult content.

As of now, NSFW/18+ projects appear to be shadowbanned from Itch's search and browsing functions. What does this mean for you? While VoidBound is still available on the platform, you can no longer discover it through search or category browsing. The only way to access it is through a direct link- something that greatly impacts visibility for us and many other creators of adult content.

This move seems to be part of a broader chilling effect, likely influenced by recent lobbying efforts. Anti-pornography groups have been putting pressure on Mastercard and Visa to take stricter stances on adult content- particularly targeting platforms like STEAM. Sadly, this pressure seems to be spilling over into other storefronts like Itch.io.

Itch.io has officially acknowledged the situation in a public post here. To summarize:

They're currently responding to increasing requirements from payment processors which affect how NSFW content is made available. While NSFW projects remain hosted, some features (like visibility in search) have been temporarily restricted until a solution can be reached that complies with these financial rules.

We’re keeping a close eye on how this develops, but our initial reaction to the statement is.. less than optimistic. Especially,  wordings like, and we quote, 

".. creators must confirm that their content is allowable under the policies of the respective payment processors linked to their account."

has us seriously concerned. If enforced to the extent the wording suggests, we may find ourselves navigating not only the platform's internal review but also the unpredictable demands of the payment processors. A situation that would only add layers of complexity.
